Steve Morris Announces Run for Mayor of Concord

Longtime commissioner enters mayoral race with focus on steady leadership, smart growth, and solutions that serve people first.

PRESS RELEASE: JUNE 20, 2025

CONCORD, NC — Steve Morris, one of the longest-serving commissioners in Cabarrus County history, former Chairman of the board, and a lifelong Concord resident, announced today he will run for Mayor of Concord in the upcoming election.

“Concord has been my home for more than 40 years. I’ve raised my family here and have had the privilege of serving in elected office for the past 12 years,” Morris said. “With Mayor Bill Dusch retiring, I believe this is the right time to step forward and continue building on the progress we’ve made.”

Morris’s campaign centers on delivering results, not rhetoric – emphasizing responsive government, smart economic growth, and practical solutions that reflect Concord’s needs as it continues to grow.

As Chairman, Morris helped lead Cabarrus County through a decade of unprecedented growth. The population increased by more than 60,000 residents, 10 new public schools were built, and more than $3.5 billion in capital investment was secured, including $2 billion from Eli Lilly. He also championed public safety and mental health initiatives, including the creation of a new courthouse, EMS headquarters, and the Stephen M. Morris Behavioral Health Center, which broke ground in 2024.

If elected mayor, Morris says he will focus on clear priorities: improving transportation, ensuring public safety, expanding housing options, and sustaining Concord’s reputation as a desirable place to live, work, and raise a family.

“My top priority is something we don’t talk about enough: a government that works,” Morris said. “Not flashy. Not performative. Just honest leadership that listens, solves problems, and puts people first.”

Morris plans to spend the months ahead meeting with residents, sharing his vision, and listening to community feedback.
